History of Mother's Day

Mother’s Day was invented in 1908 by Anna Jarvis and became an official U.S. holiday in 1914. Before that though, mother-like holidays can be traced back as far as the ancient Romans and Greeks. The mother of Zeus, known as Rhea to the Greeks and Cybele to the Romans, had many festivals thrown in her honor and, in turn, for all mothers. Other origins of inspiration for modern Mother’s Day may come from the Christian holiday Mothering Sunday which was another festival celebrating mothers. Mother’s Day wasn't really popular, though, until these two holidays merged around the 1930s and 1940s and became more secular.
