A Brief Look At The History Of Luxury Bedrooms

Jun 24, 2023

One thing that can be said about homes is that our bedrooms are our own personal safe havens. They give us a place to rest, relax, change, and prepare for our day. Because of this, many of us seek luxury bedroom sets to maximize this level of comfort. We at Globaltex Fine Linens USA offer such luxury bedding collections perfect for all types of environments. This includes bedding to keep you warm in cold areas like Montana, or breathable bedding that stays cool in areas like Houston, TX. With bedrooms being so important to our comfort and happiness, we want to take a moment and share with you information about the history of bedrooms throughout the world.

The History of Bedrooms

For many of us in the United States, it’s hard to imagine not sleeping on some kind of mattress with a pillow to compliment our heads, yet long ago, many humans would sleep much closer to the ground. Take a look at the people of Sibudu, South Africa, for example. In ancient times, where people could be sleeping outside, they would weave bedding from a long sedge grass. This was not only pleasant to smell, but was a natural insect repellent in a part of the world with many mosquitos. In fact, sedge grass is still used in making bedding materials today.

The use of mats is also prevalent throughout the history of Japan. For the wealthy, tatami, or straw, mats could line the majority of the bedroom. For the common people, an individual tatami mat, or one of cheaper materials, would be laid down to rest on. This is also a trend that has stayed well and alive today, though modern Japan has become accustomed to building more western-style homes.

Regarding western-style bedrooms and beds, elements of these designs can be traced back to ancient Rome and Egypt. Beds were used for many different purposes in these cultures. Romans would not only use them for sleeping, but also had separate beds for studying, eating, and even death. Through medieval times, the concept of privacy was fairly non-existent for many centuries. While the wealthy may hold a place of rest on the upper floors, everyone else in the house would sleep in the grand hall. It wasn’t until around the 16th Century that the middle class began to have private bedrooms for most of the members of their house, though these rooms were often empty save for the bed itself, and still not everyone had them.

Why Consider Our Luxury Bedding Collections?

At Globaltex Fine Linens USA, we not only offer bedding and linens for commercial sale, but we also supply wholesale for hotels and resorts. Our luxury bedroom sets are also always comprised of 100% organic Turkish cotton. This material is softer than normal cotton because it isn’t treated with harsh chemicals and will even get softer with more washes as the water fluffs up the cotton fibers further for a cloud-like texture. Whether you’re shopping for your home as a consumer or trying to outfit your hotel with new linens as a business owner, there’s no reason not to trust us for high-quality bedding and linens throughout the United States.
